The Uttarakhand State Council for Child Welfare was set up on 1st August 2003. Since inception, the Council has taken up welfare initiatives for the benefit of the children of Uttarakhand.

The Council is running 142 crèches (click here to see complete district wise list) in the far off and rural areas of the State. It has been organizing painting competitions the every year at the School, Block, District and State levels. Every year, it organized ten day "Learn to Live Together" Camp for the children of very poor families every year. It hosted the 31st National "Learn to Live Together" Camp in 2008 which was appreciated by all the State Councils of India and also by the Indian Council for Child Welfare. Yearly health check-up programmes were arranged with the help of D.G. Health and CMOs. In 2008 out of 4,61,022 children checked up, 19,146 were referred for treatment to District Hospitals. In Its Gender sensitization programme, it organised, Balika Mahotsava in each Block twice. It sent 51 students for mountaineering training at NIM

Uttarkashi and is providing financial help to 46 orphans studying in various schools. The Council got the brave children of the State awarded at the National level e.g. Shri Harish Rana (Tehri Garhwal) 2003, Km. Mazada (Haridwar) 2004, shri Mahesh Kumar (Uttarkashi) 2005, Km. Pooja (Almora)2006.

Rajya Sthapna Diwas is celebrated in the State under the auspices of the Council in November every year. Baby shows, seminars on healths, game and sports competitions and Bal Diwas are organized during the Week. Street Children shelters are being set up and cloths, blankets and jerseys distributed amongst the needy ones.

  • A Bal Bhawan consisting of 16 rooms was constructed and commissioned at Dehradun to the tune of Rs. 75 Lakhs was provided by ONGC.
  • A quarterly bulletin entitled "Bal Samvad" is being brought out regularly.
  • So far nine training programmes for crèches workers have been completed.
  • Coaching classes for students of class X weak in Maths Science and English are being run at the Bal Bhawan by Council.

The success of all the activities/initiatives of the Council has been possible by the keen interest and guidance given by H.E. the Governor and Officials of State Government as also Office Bearers of the Uttarakhand State Council for Child Welfare.
